A wind warning has been issued for Hawkes Bay.
MetService says that east of the main North Island ranges from Hastings to south of Eketahuna winds will strengthen to gale force overnight.
Between midnight tonight and midday Thursday westerly are likely to reach severe gale at times with gusts 120 km/h.
