Wednesday’s national forecast – NW Strengthens

A northwesterly airflow strengthens over the country today, a front moves onto the lower South Island overnight bringing rain, heavy for Fiordland.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
A chance of mist or fog morning and night, mostly sunny otherwise with gentle west to southwesterly winds. An afternoon sea breeze for eastern Northland.
Highs: 20 – 23

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Morning cloud breaks to sun and high cloud, west to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 18 – 20

Eastern North Island

Mostly sunny with some high cloud, mainly later in the day. Northwesterlies, tending east to northeast in the afternoon for Hawkes Bay and Gisborne especially near the coast.
Highs: 22 – 25

Wellington

Mostly cloudy, strong northerly winds.
Highs: 16 – 17

Marlborough & Nelson

Thickening high cloud, north to northwesterly winds pick up from afternoon.
Highs: 20 – 24

Canterbury

Thickening high cloud, northerly winds become blustery in the afternoon, strong for inland areas. Winds for northern North Canterbury are lighter.
Highs: 22 – 24

West Coast

Mostly cloudy with morning rain then showers, rain picks up for South Westland from evening, becoming heavy there overnight. Northerlies freshen.
Highs: 16 – 18

Southland & Otago
High cloud, perhaps some sun, rain overnight for Southland and Central Otago. Blustery warm north to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 21 – 24
