Wednesday’s national forecast

A ridge mostly covers the country again today however things are starting to change a little. The North Island remains under a northeasterly airflow but a low approaching from the north pushes cloud onto the upper North Island. Afternoon showers, some heavy with thunderstorms are still possible for many areas south of the Waikato. In the South Island expect a northerly airflow, some high cloud develops about the far south.

Auckland & Northland
Cloudy spells with breezy east to northeast winds, chance of a shower at times. If any showers fall about Auckland the will mainly be in the north.
Highs: 20-22

Central North Island, Bay Of Plenty, Waikato
Cloudy periods about the Bay Of Plenty with easterly breezes, chance of a shower now and then. Sunny spells elsewhere however a few isolated showers develop late afternoon and evening in the south of Waikato and some parts of the Central North Island. Showers could turn heavy and thundery then clearing by midnight.
Highs: 20-23

Eastern North Island
Sunny spells with northeasterly breezes, afternoon and evening a few isolated showers develop however possibly becoming heavy with thunderstorms then clearing later in the evening. Showers mainly about the ranges.
Highs: 19-21

Western North Island
Mostly sunny with light winds and afternoon sea breezs, clouds build during the afternoon especially inland. Late afternoon and evening isolated showers develop (once again, mainly inland) a few of which may become heavy with thunderstorms. Heavy showers then clear later in the evening.
Highs: 20-21

Wellington
Mostly sunny with northerly breezes.
High: 19

Nelson
Sunny spells with light winds then northeasterly breezes in the afternoon. Isolated showers inland during the afternoon, possibly heavy.
Highs: 19-20

Marlborough
Sunny with northerly breezes by midday, mild temperatures. Isolated showers inland during the afternoon, possibly heavy.
Highs: 22-23

Canterbury
Any morning cloud clears to a sunny day, east to northeast breezes ease overnight near the coast.
Northwesterly winds inland during the day.
Highs: 21-22

West Coast
Morning sunny spells, cloud increases from midday with northerly breezes.  Rain about Fiordland from evening the odd light spit develops further north.
Highs: 20-22

Coastal Otago
Mostly sunny with some high cloud, east to northeast breezes.
High: 18-19

Southland & Central Otago
Mostly sunny with some high cloud at times, especially towards evening. North to northwest breezes. Around dawn on Thursday winds change southwest about Southland with some rain.
Highs: 22-24
