Wednesday’s national forecast

Cold showery conditions ease over the South Island today, for the North Island a low pressure systems sits in place and brings pockets of rain or showers. Rain could be heavy about Wairarapa and Hawkes Bay.

Auckland, Northland, Bay Of Plenty & Waikato
Showers with west to southwest breezes. A few could be heavy and thundery in the afternoon with hail, mainly about Auckland and perhaps southern parts of Northland. Morning rain about the Bay Of Plenty eases to the odd shower, at night showers could return possibly heavy.
Highs: 11-12

Central North Island
Morning rain and snow to 700m easing to the odd shower, light winds tend southeast. At night rain moves in again for areas south of Lake Taupo with snow to 800m.
Highs: 7-8

Eastern North Island
Rain for Wairarapa and Hawkes Bay with gusty east to southeasterly winds, snow to 600m and 700m respectively. Rain will be heavy at times. For Gisborne expect morning rain, possibly heavy then easing to the odd shower with northeasterly winds.
High: 10-11

Western North Island
Periods of rain with strong south to southeasterly winds, showers more likely for northern Taranaki. Snow to 700m.
Highs: 10-11

Wellington
Rain with strong gusty south to southeast winds. Snow to 500m.
Highs: 9-10

Nelson
Sunny spells slowly increase from morning after any early showers clear, gusty south to southeasterly winds.
High: 11

Marlborough
Morning rain eases to the odd shower, snow flurries to 400m. Strong cold southerlies.
Highs: 10-11

Canterbury
Showers with a chance of small hail at times, snow flurries to 300m then clearing in the morning south of Banks Peninsula, further north showers don’t clear till mid afternoon or perhaps evening at the latest. South Canterbury looks to remain mostly dry today with sunny spells increasing from morning. Gusty cold southwesterlies die out at night with frosty conditions developing.

West Coast
Sunny with southeasterlies, which may be a bit breezy at times north of about Greymouth. Frosty at night in sheltered areas.
High: 11-12

Coastal Otago
Sunny spells with some cloud, west to southwest breezes.
Highs: 8-9

Central Otago
Mainly sunny with a few clouds, light southerly quarter winds. Frosty morning and night.
Highs: 4-5

Southland
Sunny and cloudy spells with light west to northwest breezes, could be a shower or two, mainly in the afternoon near the coast.
Highs: 9-10
