Wednesday’s national forecast

A low pressure system affects the North Island today while a ridge of high pressure brings settled weather to the South Island.

North Island

A mix of sun and cloud for Northland and Auckland today, a few showers may creep into Auckland at times, winds from the south or southwest. Showers at times for the Bay Of Plenty, cloudy areas for the Waikato with the risk of a shower at times. Rain for Gisborne and Hawkes Bay with heavy falls possible, easing in the evening. The odd shower for the Wairarapa, clearing in the evening. A mix of sun and cloud for the lower western North Island (Taranaki through to Wairarapa), any early showers clear, southerly winds.

Temperatures in the mid twenties for the western North Island today, afternoon temperatures in the high teens or early twenties along the east coast.

South Island

Mostly sunny for the upper South Island, any morning cloud in the east Banks Peninsula northwards clears. Southerly winds tend onshore in the afternoon for Nelson and Marlborough. Afternoon westerlies along the West Coast, northeasterlies for the east coast. Sunny areas and increasing high cloud for the lower South Island, may be a spot of rain late afternoon / evening about Southland and Otago. Winds from the west in the west, northeasterlies for coastal Otago.

Temperatures in the low to mid twenties for most today, the warmest temperatures will be about inland areas while slightly cooler temperatures will be about coastal fringes.
