Wednesday’s national forecast

A front moves off the upper South Island this morning then onto the North Island in the afternoon, clearing away overnight to the north. Winds northwest ahead of the front then changing southwest in behind. A strong Westerly airflow lies over the lower South Island for much of the day.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty

Mostly cloudy, breezy west to northwesterly winds change southwest in the evening with a few showers.
Highs: 20-24

Western North Island (including Central North Island)

Cloudy, the odd drizzle patch then some rain from midday which clears late afternoon as gusty northwesterlies change westerly or southwest.
Highs: 18-20

Eastern North Island

Thick high cloud, a few spots of rain move into the Wairarapa late morning then further north during the afternoon. Cloud clearing away in the evening as gusty northwesterlies gusty westerly.
Highs: 25-28

Wellington

Showers, clearing late afternoon as strong to gale northerly winds change southerly.
High: 20

Marlborough & Nelson

Thick high cloud in the morning with a few spots of rain, becoming mostly sunny in the afternoon as strong northwesterlies change southwest then ease.
Highs: 22-25

Canterbury

Morning spots of rain clear then mainly sunny, gusty northerlies (strong to gale inland) change southerly in the afternoon. There may be an isolated shower late afternoon / evening otherwise mainly dry for the rest of the day.
High: 24

West Coast

Heavy morning rain eases to occasional showers as northerlies change gusty southwest, sunny spells may break through more so about North Westland midday onwards.
Highs: 17-19

Southland & Otago

Morning rain eases to showers (occasionally heavy) and sunny spells, conditions may become fairly dry from afternoon about coastal Otago. Strong westerly winds gusting to gale about Southland.
Highs: 15-19
