Wednesday’s national forecast

A front moves over the North Island this morning clearing out to the east this afternoon, the South Island has a weak area of low pressure covering most regions.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Morning rain easing to the odd shower by midday as breezy northwesterly winds change westerly or southwest. Thunderstorms may develop about eastern Bay Of Plenty this morning with heavy falls then easing this afternoon. Sunny spells at times after midday also.
Highs: 18-20
 
Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Morning rain with heavy falls (more so about Taranaki) then easing to showers early afternoon as northerlies change westerly. Showers mainly clearing in the evening although the odd one may linger overnight.
Highs: 16-18
 
Eastern North Island
Rain, easing and clearing early afternoon with some sun then breaking through. Northerlies tend westerly late afternoon or evening.
Highs: 20-22
 
Wellington
Rain or showers, mostly clearing around midday although the odd one may linger till evening. Northerlies tend southerly later today.
High: 16
 
Marlborough & Nelson
Early rain eases to the odd shower, dry periods and perhaps even a few sunny spells. In the afternoon isolated showers picking up especially inland where there may be a few heavy falls / thunderstorms. Areas of precipitation ease later in the evening with any remaining showers clearing overnight. Light winds tend east to northeasterly in the afternoon.

Canterbury
Early rain or showers clear then cloud breaks to sunny spells in the afternoon, there may be an isolated shower far inland about mountain ranges late afternoon / evening otherwise dry. Southerly winds die out in the evening.
High: 16
 
West Coast
Any morning cloud / showers clear then becoming mostly sunny, there may be a few isolated showers develop late afternoon or evening inland about hills and ranges especially Buller. Rain moves into South Westland later in the evening then further north overnight with thunderstorms. Light winds tend west to southwest after midday.
Highs: 16-18
 
Southland & Otago
Sunny areas and some developing high cloud, a few spots of rain later in the evening about Southland. Late afternoon / evening about Otago there may be an isolated shower (mainly inland) otherwise dry. North to northeasterly winds.
Highs: 14-19
