Wednesday’s national forecast

A low moves over the North Island today bringing heavy rain for the upper North Island, especially in the east. Rain becoming heavy along the East Coast in the evening. The South Island has a ridge of high pressure.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty

Rain with heavy falls (torrential falls possible, especially in the east) then easing in the afternoon about Northland, and elsewhere in the evening, to the odd shower as northeasterly winds change westerly or southwest.

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Cloudy with rain developing about Taranaki and the Central North Island in the morning then spreading southwards in the afternoon. Rain may be heavy in the evening, more so about the Central North Island. Easterly winds tend southeast in the evening.

Eastern North Island
Cloudy with drizzle from midday turning to rain in the evening and becoming heavy. Southeasterly winds.
Highs: 14-15
 
Wellington
Cloudy with showers from late afternoon, easterlies tend southeast in the evening.

Marlborough & Nelson
Mostly cloudy with patchy showers or drizzle from afternoon, southeasterly winds.
Highs: 13-14
 
Canterbury
Sunny areas and increasing high cloud. Cloud may thicken and lower from Banks Peninsula northwards in the afternoon. East to northeasterly winds.
High: 12
 
West Coast
Mostly sunny with some high cloud, light winds.
Highs: 12-13
 
Southland & Otago
Mostly sunny with light winds for most, west to northwest breezes about Southland. Overnight showers with a southwest change.
High: 10-13
