Wednesday’s national forecast

A southwesterly airflow lies over New Zealand, tending more southerly over the South Island this afternoon and evening. Showers for many regions heavy for some with possible thunderstorms, more information below.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty

Cloudy areas, a few showers pass through in the afternoon as west to southwesterly winds freshen. Showers about the Bay Of Plenty may be heavy with thunderstorms then clearing away in the evening.
Highs: 21-23

Western North Island (including Central North Island)

A few morning showers then clearing to afternoon sunny spells, west to southwest winds brisk about Taranaki. Showers about the Central North Island more around midday then clearing mid to late afternoon.
Highs: 18-19

Eastern North Island

Some morning sun, showers develop in the afternoon as light winds change southerly. Showers may be heavy with a chance of thunderstorms then easing later in the evening.
Highs: 22-23

Wellington

Winds change southerly this morning bringing mostly cloudy skies and the odd shower for much of the day.
High: 15

Marlborough & Nelson
Areas of cloud with light winds tending east to northeast in the afternoon, the odd isolated shower mainly for southern parts of Marlborough. More widespread showers developing in the evening or perhaps more towards midnight for some.

Highs: 15-19

Canterbury

Any early showers clear then expect areas of cloud with light winds, showers develop again during the afternoon with southerly breezes, especially inland where they could be heavy with thunderstorms and hail.
High: 16

West Coast

Sunny areas with westerly winds, there could be an isolated shower in the evening as winds tend southwest otherwise mainly dry.
Highs: 16-17

Southland & Otago

Showers about Southland pushing into Otago during the morning with breezy cool southwesterly winds. A chance of a heavy shower or two with some hail. Showers ease in the evening.
Highs: 12-14
