Wednesday’s national forecast

A strong northwesterly airflow for much of the country today. High cloud for the east of the South Island and patchy rain out west. For the North Island expect mostly sunny conditions with cloud building in the west later in the day.

Auckland & Northland
Sunny with light winds tending northwest in the afternoon, some late evening or overnight cloud in the west.
Highs: 15-16

Bay Of Plenty, Waikato & Central North Island

Sunny with light winds after a frosty start. Some late cloud for the Central North Island and Waikato, mainly in the west.
Highs: 11-14

Eastern North Island

Sunny with light winds, northwesterlies freshen about the Wairarapa from
morning however. Late high cloud.
Highs: 15-17

Western North Island

Mostly sunny with northwesterly winds, areas of cloud gradually increase
from afternoon with skies becoming cloudy in the evening. The odd spot of rain
overnight.
Highs 14-15

Wellington

Cloudy periods with strong northerly winds, gusting to gale force at times
from midday. Overnight spots of rain.
High: 14

Nelson

Sunny spells and some increasing cloud, skies becoming mostly cloudy in the
evening. Northwesterly winds becoming brisk by evening. Overnight spots of rain
possible.
High: 14

Marlborough

Sunny areas and some high cloud, thickening in the evening. Gusty
northwesterly winds strong from evening.
Highs: 15-16

Canterbury

Sunny areas and thickening high cloud, mostly cloudy by midday. North to
northwesterly winds increase becoming brisk from evening about the coast.
Northwesterlies strong at times by afternoon inland. Spots of rain may spread
into the foothills from the west overnight.
Highs: 14-16

West Coast

Cloudy with increasing northerly winds, strong later in the day about North
Westland. Winds strong about South Westland from afternoon. Patchy showers then
rain moves into South Westland in the evening then further north
overnight.
High: 13

Coastal Otago

Thick high cloud with northerly winds, brisk from afternoon. A few spits of
morning rain possible then dry.
Highs: 14-15

Central Otago

Thick high cloud with northwesterlies, brisk from afternoon. Late evening
rain develops in the far west of the district.
High: 11

Southland

Thick high cloud with gusty northerly winds, overnight rain with a
southwest change.
High: 16
