Our windy capital has earned international recognition as one of the world’s scariest places to arrive in by plane.
UK publication The Telegraph has named it as one of 15 freaky landing spots.
The article, which features video of some fairly hairy approaches, says the short runway, approach through the hilly landscape and powerful crosswinds can make for “a terrifyingly turbulent landing”.
Other airports that made the list include Paro in Bhutan, where only eight pilots are certified to land. Landings there involve a rapid descent into a deep valley, and a steep bank to the left immediately before touchdown when white-knuckled passengers breathe a sigh of relief.
Saba, in the Caribbean has one of the shortest runways at just under 400 metres long – and its location on a cliff with treacherous drops on three sides adds to the fear factor.
