Tuesday’s national forecast

A northwesterly airflow lies over New Zealand today, a cold front pushes onto the lower South Island this morning slowly moving northwards reaching the lower North Island overnight.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
A mix of sun and cloud, west to southwesterly winds.
Highs: 19-21

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Sunny areas and increasing cloud, there may be a light shower or drizzle patch at times for Kapiti. Chance of a light shower about Taranaki also mainly later in the day then overnight most areas see some patchy rain. Northwesterly winds, breezy at times from afternoon.
Highs: 15-17

Eastern North Island
Mostly sunny with some high cloud, light winds tend northeast near the coast then dying out in the evening.
Highs: 18-21

Wellington
Sunny areas and increasing cloud, rain later in the evening or overnight. Northwesterly winds strengthen.
High: 16

Marlborough & Nelson
Sunny areas and increasing high cloud, patchy rain develops about Nelson late afternoon with a few spots spreading into Marlborough in the evening. Northwesterlies becoming gusty in the afternoon.
Highs: 18-21

Canterbury
Sunny areas and some high cloud, rain develops about the high country from afternoon becoming heavy then easing later in the evening. Breezy north to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 18-21

West Coast
Rain with heavy falls about South Westland then becoming heavy about North Westland in the afternoon. Rain eases in the evening as northwest winds change westerly.
Highs: 12-14

Southland & Otago
High cloud, expect rain for western parts of Southland and western inland Central Otago near the ranges. Showers from midday elsewhere as northwesterlies change southwest, showers clear in the evening. Showers may become heavy with hail / thunder in the afternoon about coastal Otago.
Highs: 13-19
