Tuesday’s national forecast

A southwesterly airflow lies over New Zealand today, becoming unstable for eastern regions in the afternoon.

North Island

Occasional showers for the upper / western North Island, some morning rain north of Auckland then easing. Sun breaks through at times especially afternoon onwards. High cloud for the east coast, mid level cloud thickens in the afternoon about Hawkes Bay and Gisborne bringing showers which clear overnight. Showers could turn heavy with hail for a time.

South Island

The West Coast can expect morning rain then easing to showers. Nelson has a mainly sunny day. Marlborough is mostly sunny to start, cloud builds in the afternoon bringing isolated showers, some could be heavy with thunderstorms / hail then clearing at night. Canterbury is similar to Marlborough however thunderstorms and hail may develop a little closer to midday with a cool southwest change then conditions ease by evening.

Southland and Otago has areas of cloud and a few isolated showers, some may become heavy with hail / thunder about coastal Otago then easing during the afternoon.

Temperatures

Temperatures range from 13 to 19 degrees across the North Island today, the coldest highs will be about the Central Plateau, the warmest about Hawkes Bay and Gisborne. Highs range from 12 to 17 degrees for the South Island, the coldest highs will be about Fiordland, the warmest Marlborough and perhaps parts of North Canterbury.
