Tuesday’s national forecast

A southwesterly airlfow lies over New Zealand today, a front moves onto the lower South Island this morning then reaches the western North Island this evening.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Some cloud and the odd shower, some may be heavy late afternoon / evening. Breezy westerlies tend southwest later in the day.
Highs: 14-16

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Mostly cloudy with the odd shower, especially about Taranaki. Showers become heavy late afternoon / evening then easing overnight. Freshening westerlies then tending southwest later in the day.
Highs: 9-13

Eastern North Island
Mostly sunny, any early showers clear. West to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 16-17

Wellington
Partly cloudy with breezy northwesterly winds, overnight southerlies bring showers.
High: 13

Marlborough & Nelson
Mostly sunny with some high cloud. West to northwesterly winds for Marlborough, west to southwesterly winds for Nelson.
Highs: 13-14

Canterbury
Mostly sunny, some high cloud. Northwesterly winds tend southwest in the evening bringing some cloud, mainly coastal with the risk of a shower on Banks Peninsula.
Highs: 12-14

West Coast
Showers, some may be heavy, especially around midday. West to southwesterly winds.
Highs: 9-12

Southland & Otago
Showers about Southland spread into Otago during the afternoon as westerlies tend gusty cold southwest around midday. Parts of north Otago may stay fairly dry but there is the risk of a shower from afternoon. Snow flurries lower to low levels overnight (100 to 200m).
Highs: 8-11
