Tuesday’s national forecast

A low centred to the northeast of the North Island and a large high in the Tasman Sea direct a southerly airflow over New Zealand today.

North Island
Some cloud for the upper North Island today, the odd shower also especially this afternoon just south of Auckland, about the Waikato and Bay Of Plenty. These showers may become heavy with thunder then easing later this evening. Winds from the south. Some cloud and the odd shower for the lower western North Island (Taranaki through to Kapiti), dry spells increasing for some this afternoon. Areas of rain or showers along the east coast with cool Southerlies.

Temperatures in the low to mid twenties for most of the North Island today, only climbing into the high teens for the likes of Wellington and some inland areas however.

South Island
Fairly cloudy along the east coast north of about Otago Peninsula, there may be some drizzle this morning then a chance of the odd sunny spell from afternoon. Winds mostly from the south. Morning cloud for the rest of Otago and Southland clears to a mostly sunny afternoon. Mostly sunny for Nelson and Marlborough with light winds this morning then winds tend onshore in the afternoon. Sunny along the West Coast with light winds tending west to southwest in the afternoon.

Temperatures in the high teens for Canterbury and coastal Otago today. High’s in the low to mid twenties elsewhere, perhaps high twenties for parts of Buller.
