Tuesday’s national forecast

A high lies over the South Island today bringing mainly settled conditions. Cold southerlies over the North Island bring showers to the south and east, mainly sunny out west.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty

Mainly sunny weather with south to southwesterly winds. Could be a frosty start south Auckland southwards, especially about the Waikato.
Highs: 12-13

Western North Island (including Central North Island)

Sunny for Taranaki with southerly breezes. Areas of cloud and some sun elsewhere, a few showers possible in the afternoon. Southerly winds.
Highs: 9-12

Eastern North Island

Showers, a risk of small hail. Snow to 400m, perhaps 300m at times. Winds very cold from the southwest strong right on the coast.
Highs: 10-11

Wellington

Occasional showers with a few snow flurries to 300m, clearing by evening. Strong cold southerly winds.
High: 9

Marlborough & Nelson

A mainly sunny day with southerly winds, frosty morning and night.
Highs: 10-12

Canterbury

Sunny or becoming sunny in the morning, any morning showers about Banks Peninsula clear. Light winds.
Highs: 9

West Coast

Sunny with light winds, frosty morning and night especially inland.
Highs: 9-10

Southland & Otago

Mainly sunny with light winds. Heavy frosts morning and night.
High: 6-7
