Tsunami generated after powerful South Pacific earthquake

New Zealand Civil Defence earlier today issued a Tsunami Warning Marine for New Zealand following a powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake which has struck off the Kermadec Islands this morning.

As of 9:30am all warnings were cancelled.

GeoNet’s Tsunami Guage Network has already detected a significant sized wave passing Raoul Island to our north.

The quake struck at 7.03am at a depth of 48km.

The Kermadecs are around 800km from New Zealand.
