Thursday’s national forecast

A cold front and associated low moves off the upper South Island then onto the North Island during today, meanwhile a weak ridge moves over the South Island.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Rain developing in the morning, perhaps heavy for a time afternoon then easing by evening as northwest winds change southwest. Precipitation clearing overnight about Bay Of Plenty and perhaps Waikato, especially in the east.
Highs: 16-20

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Mostly cloudy, rain or showers about Taranaki and Kapiti spreading elsewhere by midday. Northerlies change southerly later in the evening at which point rain may become heavy for a time overnight.
Highs: 14-19

Eastern North Island
Sunny areas and thickening high cloud, some rain spreads into Wairarapa during the afternoon then hitting further north in the evening. Northerlies change southwest later in the day.
Highs: 22-23

Wellington
The odd shower then rain develops around midday, possibly becoming heavy in the afternoon then easing evening. Northerlies change to the south in the afternoon.
High: 17

Marlborough & Nelson
Rain with heavy falls possible, easing to showers by evening. Northerlies change to the south in the afternoon.
Highs: 16-19

Canterbury
Mostly cloudy with early rain easing to the odd shower, drying out near the coast in the afternoon with the odd shower continuing about inland areas till evening. South to southwesterly winds die out later in the day.
Highs: 11-13

West Coast
Mostly sunny about South Westland, about Greymouth northwards early rain eases then expect the odd shower to linger through till evening. Southwesterlies.
Highs: 15-17

Southland & Otago
Sunny areas and some cloud about Southland with light winds, west to southwest winds freshen in the evening bringing showers. Otago sees mostly cloudy skies, later in the evening the odd shower drifts in as winds tend southwest.
Highs: 13-14
