Thursday’s national forecast

A cold southwesterly airflow for the South Island spreads over the North Island today, showers gradually clear from the south then expect mainly settled weather on Friday.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Showers, possibly heavy with thunder and hail in the afternoon then clearing evening. Westerlies change southwest during the afternoon.
Highs: 18-19

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Showers, some may be heavy then clearing late afternoon or evening as southwest winds change southerly.
Highs: 14-17

Eastern North Island
Dry at first with some sun, showers with a chance of heavy falls / thunder and hail developing about the Wairarapa in the morning then moving further north in the afternoon.
Highs: 15-20

Wellington
Showers ease with only the odd one remaining from midday, sun breaks through at times from afternoon. Fresh cool southerly winds.
High: 14

Marlborough & Nelson
Early rain eases to the odd shower, some sun may break through at times from afternoon. Southerly winds for Marlborough, tending northerly for Nelson.
Highs: 15-17

Canterbury
Sunny spells with fresh south to southwesterly winds, showers about inland areas (mainly around the Rakaia Gorge and northwards) clearing in the evening.
Highs: 14-16

West Coast
Mostly sunny for South Westland, winds tend southerly. North Westland has some cloud and a few showers,
clearing in the evening. Showers about Buller may be heavy in isolated areas during the afternoon. Winds from the southwest.
Highs: 18-21

Southland & Otago
A few morning showers then sunny areas increase, fresh cool southwest winds (strong about the Otago coast) ease in the evening.
Highs: 14-16
