Thursday’s national forecast

A southwesterly airflow lies over New Zealand today with a front pushing onto the lower South Island this afternoon.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Occasional showers, especially afternoon as southwesterly winds freshen. The Bay Of Plenty stays mainly dry although there is the chance of a shower in the evening. Some sun at times.
Highs: 16-18

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Mostly cloudy with a few showers, mostly clearing away in the evening. Westerly winds, tending more southwest about Taranaki.
Highs: 12-15

Eastern North Island
A few showers about the Wairarapa spreading into Hawkes Bay and Gisborne during the afternoon as light winds tend southerly. Areas of sun and high cloud before showers move in.
Highs: 14-19

Wellington
The odd shower, clearing in the evening. Southerlies tend northerly late afternoon.
High: 13

Marlborough & Nelson
Morning showers for Marlborough then mostly clearing although a shower or two may hang on till late afternoon, skies are mostly cloudy then breaking away in the evening. Nelson sees morning cloud break to mostly sunny weather. Southerlies tend easterly around midday for Marlborough, afternoon northerlies in Nelson.
Highs: 10-14

Canterbury
Morning showers clear then sunny areas develop, southwesterly winds tend northeasterly in the afternoon.
Highs: 10-12

West Coast
A few showers for Greymouth northwards during the day, some sun at times further south. Rain moves into South Westland during the afternoon then pushes further north in the evening, there may be a few heavy falls. Winds from the southwest then picking up from the west or northwest later in the day.
Highs: 10-13

Southland & Otago
Some morning sun then a few showers from afternoon for Southland as northwesterly winds tend gusty westerly. Otago is mostly sunny, some evening cloud with the chance of a shower.
Highs: 11-13
