Thursday’s national forecast

Frontal activity reinvigorates about the lower North Island on Thursday while another front moves out of the Tasman Sea onto the lower South Island late afternoon.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty

Sunny spells for Auckland northwards with freshening northwesterly winds, late evening showers. The Waikato is mostly cloudy, chance of a shower or two especially later in the day.
Highs: 24-29

Western North Island (including Central North Island)

Rain, possibly heavy in the afternoon then easing and clearing later in the evening. Northwesterlies pick up later in the day.
Highs: 20-21

Eastern North Island
Cloudy with areas of rain (more so from afternoon), clearing in the evening. North to northwesterly winds pick up later in the day becoming gusty. Gisborne is mainly dry for much of the day with some high cloud.

Highs: 25-31

Wellington

Cloudy with rain developing around midday, clearing in the evening. Northerly winds.
High: 17

Marlborough & Nelson

Cloudy, some rain moves in early afternoon then clearing by evening. Rain may be heavy for northwest Nelson and the Marlborough Sounds. North to northeasterly winds.
Highs: 18-20

Canterbury

Mostly cloudy, some sun breaking through late afternoon / evening. East to northeasterly winds.
Highs: 20-22

West Coast

Sunny areas and some high cloud, some rain is possible about northern parts of Buller from afternoon then clearing in the evening. Light winds.
Highs: 18-20

Southland & Otago

Mostly cloudy, the odd spit of rain possible in the afternoon / evening then clearing away overnight. Rain moves into Fiordland in the evening, possibly heavy for a time then easing overnight. Winds from the north or northeast.
Highs: 16-22
