Thursday’s national forecast

A strong south to southeasterly airflow spreads over the North Island today, showers or rain for most regions. The South Island also has a southerly airflow, however not as strong. Sunny on the West Coast with patchy showers or drizzle from Canterbury northwards in the east.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty

Showers, clearing overnight for most. A few sunny spells possible also. Winds, cool from the south, from around midday.
Highs: 14-16

Western North Island (including Central North Island)

Rain eases to showers around midday, which ease and clear in the evening. South to southeasterly winds gusty about the coast.
Highs: 12-14

Eastern North Island

Rain easing to patchy showers overnight. Gisborne may be dry for a time in the morning. Strong south to southwesterly winds, with a risk of winds gusting to gale about coastal fringes.
Highs: 13-15

Wellington

Morning rain eases to the odd patchy shower, strong southerly winds gusting to gale at times.
High: 12

Marlborough & Nelson

Any early drizzle clears, sunny areas increase from late morning. Cool southerly winds. Strong southerly winds about the Marlborough Sounds gusting to gale at times, especially in the outer Sounds.
Highs: 13-14

Canterbury

Southwest winds freshen in the morning bringing some drizzle or a few showers. Clearing later in the evening. A few light snow flurries to 500m. South Canterbury may remain fairly dry.
High: 11

West Coast

Mostly sunny with southeasterly winds.
Highs: 12-14

Southland & Otago

Any early showers clear then expect sunny areas with light Sou’West winds, dying out by evening.
High: 9-11
