Thursday’s national forecast

Updated 8:07am — Rain this morning over the North Island clears off to the east this morning, mainly settled for the South Island howevever a front sitting over Fiordland slowly pivots onto the West Coast of the South Island later in the day bringing rain.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty

Morning rain with heavy falls possible then clearing – sunny areas developing this morning and humid Northerlies change westerly – and they may be a little breezy at times.  
Highs: 15-17

Western North Island (including Central North Island)

Sunny spells developing and any remaining downpours clearing. Westerly winds. Rain moves in again overnight.
Highs: 14

Eastern North Island

Some morning rain (heavy in the ranges of Gisborne and northern Hawkes Bay) clearing away then becoming sunny after midday, breezy northerlies at first then tending northwest in the afternoon.
Highs: 18-19

Wellington

Morning rain with heavy falls possible then clearing around midday, afternoon sunny areas. Gusty northwesterly winds develop.
High: 12

Marlborough & Nelson

Any morning rain clearing away then becoming sunny in the afternoon, northwesterlies pick up after midday. Some further rain moves in overnight mainly into Nelson.
Highs: 13-15

Canterbury

Morning high cloud clears to a mostly sunny day, light winds tend north to northwesterly in the afternoon.
Highs: 13-14

West Coast

Mostly cloudy about South Westland with rain in Fiordland, some sun further north then rain moves in later in the evening. Winds from the northeast.
High: 10

Southland & Otago

Mostly cloudy skies with northerly winds, some rain moves into Southland and Central Otago in the afternoon as winds change southwest. A few showers reach coastal Otago later in the evening or overnight.
Highs: 8-12
