The nation’s forecast for this first day of 2012

Here’s the way things are shaping up on this New Year’s Day.

North Island-

A very cloudy day is expected for the island.  Rainshowers will keep the central part of the island wet for much of the day.  Heavy rain is possible, mainly tonight and mainly in the southern half including places like Tongariro National Park, Taihape and Hawke’s Bay.

The northern and southern extremes won’t see a completely settled day, but rain is expected to ease off a bit in these areas as we move into this afternoon.

Temperatures should be fairly typical for this time year, however the very muggy conditions may make it seem a bit uncomfortable.

South Island-

A beautiful Sunday is expected across the entire Island with the exception of the far north.  Tasman, Nelson and Marlborough could all see rain later this morning and into early afternoon.

Temperatures should be right about normal for this time of year, giving most of the South Island a very nice start to 2012.
