Sunday's national forecast


A front slowly pushes northwards over the South Island today meanwhile a westerly airflow lies over the North Island, moving around a large high in the Tasman Sea.

North Island
Mostly sunny for Northland, Auckland and the Bay Of Plenty today, westerly winds becoming a little breezy this afternoon. Morning cloud from Waikato down through to Kapiti in the west, chance of a shower then sunny areas increase this afternoon with breezy westerly winds. A mostly sunny day along the east coast with northwesterly winds.

Temperatures quite hot today, getting into the mid to late twenties for most. Afternoon high's in the early to mid thirties for Hawkes Bay, Gisborne and perhaps eastern Bay Of Plenty.

South Island
Cloudy for the West Coast with showers, heavy rain about South Westland (especially Fiordland) then gradually easing from afternoon. Sunny for Nelson and Marlborough with west to northwesterly winds. Canterbury has sunny areas and some high cloud, during the morning southerlies move northwards through South Canterbury reaching North Canterbury in the afternoon. Cloud will gradually increase with showers moving into South Canterbury late afternoon then moving further north in the evening.

Rain for Southland and Otago, possibly heavy then easing and clearing in the evening. Winds are light tending to the west about Southland.

High's in the mid to late twenties for Canterbury through to Nelson in the east, Marlborough may see high's in the early thirties. Temperatures in the low twenties for the West Coast, mid to late teens about Southland and Otago.
