Sunday’s national forecast

Upper North Island

Sunny areas and increasing cloud with northwesterly winds, late afternoon or evening a gusty southwest change moves in bringing showers possibly heavy for a time then easing overnight.

Lower North Island

Gusty northwesterly winds, strong through Cook Strait with a risk of gales. Rain moves in this afternoon with a westerly winds then winds swing to the south later this evening with rain easing overnight. Some snow about higher parts (above 800m) of the Central Plateau this evening then easing overnight. The east coast is mainly dry with increasing high cloud and gusty northwesterly winds, this evening showers finally move in with a cold south to southwest change.

Upper South Island

Rain with heavy falls on the West Coast, easing to showers this afternoon as northwesterly winds change southwest. Showers clear this evening. Rain moves into Nelson this morning, easing in the afternoon then clearing evening with cooler southwest winds. Cold south to southwesterly winds push through Canterbury this morning then onto Marlborough this afternoon bringing rain, expect gusty northwesterly winds before the change moves through. Some snow may fall as low as 400m about Canterbury and 600m about Marlborough before mostly clearing this evening although a few showers may cling to Banks Peninsula, clearing there overnight.

Lower South Island

Rain for South Westland clears this afternoon as winds tend cooler southwest. For Otago and Southland expect rain or showers with cold southwest winds, mostly clearing this afternoon but a few showers lingering about Southland and coastal Otago for much of the day. Snow flurries also possible down to 400m also.
