Sunday’s national forecast

Upper North Island

Mostly cloudy with northwesterly winds, a few showers about then turning to rain this afternoon about Auckland southwards. Northland may not see the odd shower till afternoon.

Lower North Island

Mainly cloudy, patchy rain in the west and about Wellington with northwesterly winds. Southerlies push into Wellington this afternoon then further north in the evening. Rain during the day north of Wanganui may be more persistent. Along the east coast from Gisborne through to the Wairarapa expect thick high cloud and the odd spot of rain, southerlies push through later in the evening bringing a few showers.

Upper South Island

Fairly cloudy skies, areas of rain or showers for Canterbury with southerly winds today, easing in the evening. Marlborough and Nelson sees sunny areas and light winds, southerlies push into Marlborough from afternoon bringing increasing cloud then some rain which moves into Nelson by evening. Cloudy areas on the West Coast with patchy showers, easing this afternoon for some but south of about Greymouth some rain may remain.

Lower South Island

Morning rain clears Southland, remaining fairly cloudy with southerly winds. Otago sees morning rain ease to drizzle patches, mostly clearing by evening, southerly winds once again. Along the West Coast, some rain Hokitika southwards with northwesterlies but once in Fiordland winds shift to the southeast with drier conditions and perhaps some sun.
