Sunday’s national forecast

Upper North Island

Areas of rain, easing this afternoon and mostly clearing away as northwesterly winds change southwest. Overnight rain moves back into Northland with northerly quarter winds, rain may be heavy.

Lower North Island

Cloudy areas in the west with northwesterly winds, perhaps a shower or two about. Southerlies working their way into Wellington this afternoon then gradually moving northwards bringing drier conditions. Along the east coast it’s mainly sunny, as southerlies move northwards this afternoon and evening some cloud and a few showers may move through.

Upper South Island

A mainly sunny day for Nelson and Marlborough after morning cloud clears, light winds. On the West Coast expect some cloud and the chance of a shower or two then clearing away by evening. Canterbury sees cloudy areas, the odd light shower possible more likely late afternoon / evening as a southerly wind flow establishes over the region.

Lower South Island

South to southeasterly winds from this morning bring mainly cloudy skies, showers initially about Southland this morning then pushing northwards into Otago this afternoon. A few showers about Fiordland in the west then clearing this afternoon.
