Sunday’s national forecast

Upper North Island

Morning rain eases to showers and clears for Northland and Auckland then expect sunny spells, light winds gradually swing around to the southwest. For the likes of GBI, Coromandal and the Bay Of Plenty rain may be heavy in the morning then easing afternoon, northerlies tend southwest later in the day for these areas. Periods of rain for the Waikato and Central North Island clear later in the day.

Lower North Island

Mostly sunny in the west with southeasterly winds, any early rain clears. There could be a late afternoon / evening isolated showers inland Wanganui southwards. Along the east coast expect cloudy periods with south to southeasterly winds, the odd shower possible, for northern Hawkes Bay northwards expect rain which could be heavy then easing late afternoon / evening. A few morning showers clear about Wellington then expect sunny spells to slowly break through, southerly winds.

Upper South Island

Light winds with cloud skies and periods of rain, easing in the afternoon and clearing by evening. North Canterbury mainly sees the odd drizzle patch clearing in the morning then sunny spells develop, winds tend easterly by midday.

Lower South Island

Any morning cloud clears then expect sunny areas and some cloud, easterlies along the east coast and westerlies in the west. West to northwest winds build about Southland, Otago and inland Canterbury later in the evening, cloud also increases in the west later in the day.
