September ending with a hint of summer? (+Nationwide temp map)

Are you one of the New Zealanders feeling hints of summer today? A number of WeatherWatch.co.nz followers have posted photos of blue skies and many comments talking about warm and sunny conditions today, September 30th.

Many parts of the North Island are in the late teens right now – Auckland City and Hamilton are both 18 degrees. Some temperatures around Hawkes Bay, Waikato, Auckland region and Northland are also creeping into the 20s this hour.

Auckland has another mostly sunny day with the Coromandel Peninsula shouldering a few light showers caught up in the light nor’east flow.  Great Barrier Island has been mostly dry but a few light showers have moved over the island today.

Wellington has a brisk to strong northerly with gusts to 70km/h now and a temperature around 15 degrees.

Showers and patchy rain – plus clouds – are pushing into western and southern parts of the South Island now – and will set in overnight in the west.

Temperaturewise in the South Island, as a result of the increasing clouds, showers and varying wind directions, are therefore far more mixed up.

Kaikoura and Lyttelton are only on 11 degrees this hour, while Ashburton is on 18, Dunedin on 17 and Christchurch 14, as some examples.
