Saturday’s national forecast

An area of low pressure brings rain to the upper North Island from afternoon today meanwhile further south over the South Island another area of low pressure brings the chance of unstable conditions this afternoon for some.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Sun at first then expect increasing cloud, rain moves into Northland around midday becoming heavy then spreading further south late afternoon or evening. Rain has a higher risk of being heavy Auckland northwards rather than further south but the chance of heavy rain further south exists to an extent. Winds from the west although northerly quarter winds for Northland spread to most regions by evening.

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
A morning shower or two then sunny spells increase, westerly winds.
Highs: 18-22

Eastern North Island
Mostly sunny, light winds tend to the south for a time in the afternoon then swing around to the east or northeast by evening. Some cloud moves into the Wairarapa for a time in the afternoon bringing a light shower or two, dry further north but some rain may affect Hawkes Bay and Gisborne overnight.

Wellington
Early showers then sunny spells, light southerlies tend northerly in the afternoon.
High: 19

Marlborough & Nelson
Any early cloud clears then mostly sunny, light winds tend northerly by midday.
Highs: 19-21

Canterbury
Morning cloud breaks to sunny areas, early afternoon showers develop about South Canterbury spreading into North Canterbury late afternoon as southerlies freshen. These showers may become heavy with thunderstorms and hail then easing overnight.
Highs: 17-19

West Coast
Cloudy areas and the odd shower, light winds tend west to southwest after midday. Becoming dry during the evening as winds tend more southerly.
Highs: 17-21

Southland & Otago
Morning rain for Southland then easing to showers by midday, clearing evening. Cool southwesterly winds. Sunny at first for Otago then showers develop late morning as southerlies freshen, showers may become heavy in the afternoon then easing in the evening and clearing overnight.
Highs: 14-17
