Saturday’s national forecast

A strong Southerly airflow over the South Island spreads over the North Island in the evening, meanwhile a deep low centre over central New Zealand slowly moves eastwards during the day.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Morning rain (possibly heavy) then easing to showers, gusty westerlies tend southwest later in the day.
Highs: 15

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Morning rain eases to a few showers, sunny spells from afternoon about Taranaki. Breezy southwesterly winds.
Highs: 11-14

Eastern North Island
Dry at first with high cloud and northerlies. Rain spreads northwards during the morning and afternoon with a fresh southwest change, clearing overnight.
Highs: 14-15

Wellington
Morning rain eases to the odd shower, southerlies freshen from morning becoming strong from afternoon then easing overnight.
High: 11

Marlborough & Nelson
Morning showers clear then cloud breaks to afternoon sunny spells, cool southwesterly winds.
Highs: 13-15

Canterbury
Areas of rain with snow to 500m, easing to showers in the afternoon then clearing overnight. Strong southwesterly winds gust to gale about the coast then easing from evening.
Highs: 9

West Coast
Sunny areas and some high cloud with south to southeasterly winds.
Highs: 13-15

Southland & Otago
Morning rain eases to the odd shower, mostly clearing in the evening however the odd shower lingers about coastal Otago then clearing overnight. A few snow flurries to 400m. Cold south to southwesterly winds.
Highs: 6-8
