Rare forecast for today

Today we’ll have a break in the severe weather as skies clear in most places and winds ease following a wintry outbreak yesterday that saw heavy snow to sea level in Otago and Southland and snow to 100 metres around Wellington…

Temperatures are going to be incredibly low today too, from Southland to Northland and everywhere in between.

Coldest places this morning:

  • Auckland 1
  • Hamilton -2
  • Te Aroha -5
  • Rotorua 0
  • Taupo -3
  • Desert Road -5
  • Hawera -2
  • Palmerston North -2
  • Blenheim -4
  • Christchurch 1
  • Timaru -2
  • Wanaka -3
  • Queenstown -2

Auckland’s expected to only reach 11 today while almost all other centres only reach single digits or maybe10.  Even for winter that’s a rare forecast for New Zealand.  Whangarei, the Bay of Islands and the Far North are likely to be our only ‘tropical’ centres climbing to a balmy 12 or 13 at the hottest time of the day.

While a few light and brief showers may remain in Wellington and some eastern parts of the North Island they will clear during the day.  The only other regions to get showers will be Southland and coastal Otago where a last flick of showers will spread through this afternoon.  There’s the risk of a light snow flurry at higher altitudes but certainly nothing like yesterday.

It will remain bitterly cold in the South Island for the next 5 days while northerlies developing this time next week in the North Island.

Nice here this morning but I hate the latter part of the forecast ….WEDS: Late clouds possible as winds turn more south west.
THURS: Southwesterlies will drag in a few clouds and maybe a few shower

A beaut sunny day so far in Whangarei, was 7 deg at 5am and had dropped further to 4 deg at 7am, no frost though. My weather station is currently showing 11 deg at 11am, humidity is low also at 43%. A great day to be out doors.
