Monday’s national forecast – Between a high and a low (+10 maps)

New Zealand lies between a low out to the east and a high in the Tasman Sea today, the airflow is coming in from the southwest.

North Island

Morning cloud for the upper North Island breaks to sunny spells, perhaps the risk of a shower late afternoon or evening otherwise mainly dry. Morning showers in the southwest (Taranaki through to Manawatu), thinning out and clearing in the afternoon, sun breaks through. In the east expect morning sun then cloud increases in the afternoon with southwesterlies, late afternoon or evening showers for Hawkes Bay and Gisborne.

South Island

Morning cloud and showers in the west clear then sunny spells increase. Cloud and a shower or two in the south and east, some sun may break through at times in the east. Isolated showers develop about some inland hills and ranges this afternoon, some may become heavy with a thunderstorm late afternoon or evening for Central Otago through into the Mackenzie Country. Nelson and Marlborough are mostly sunny, some cloud possible from afternoon.
