Monday’s national forecast

A large anticyclone covers New Zealand today with a frontal feature lying over the lower South Island.

North Island

For the upper North Island expect cloudy areas and occasional sun today, winds are light with afternoon sea breezes. There may also be a shower or two about also but overall conditions should be mainly dry. Mostly sunny weather is expected for the lower North Island, there will be some morning cloud however from Taranaki through to Kapiti then breaking away.

South Island

Mostly sunny for the West Coast north of about Hokitika, Nelson, Marlborough and Canterbury. Winds are mostly from the westerly quarter however expect coastal afternoon northeasterlies for Marlborough and Canterbury. Otago has a mix of sun and cloud with winds from the west or northwest, coastal northeasterlies for Otago. A few spots of rain may spread into Central Otago in the evening.

Fiordland has a cloudy day with showers or perhaps some rain at times.

Temperatures

Afternoon temperatures in the mid to late twenties for most regions today however coastal fringe areas that get a reasonable sea breeze may mean temperatures are capped in the early twenties for some. Also the West Coast south of Greymouth sees temperatures in the high teens or early twenties.
