Monday’s national forecast

A weakening front pushes northwards over the South Island today meanwhile a west to southwesterly airflow flows over the North Island.

North Island

Any morning cloud breaks to mostly sunny weather for the upper North Island, winds from the southwest becoming a little breezy this afternoon. Morning cloud may bring a shower or two for the lower western North Island (Taranaki to Kapiti) then breaking to afternoon sun, westerly quarter winds. Sunny for the east coast, afternoon east to northeast breezes for Hawkes Bay and Gisborne.

South Island

Morning rain for the West Coast of the South Island, easing to showers this afternoon as northwesterlies change southwest. Some sun starts to break through in the afternoon about South Westland and remaining showers clear parts of North Westland in the evening. Sun and some high cloud for Nelson and Marlborough, winds from the west or northwest then tending southwest in the evening.

Morning high cloud for Canterbury with spots of rain possible, especially South Canterbury. Brightening up in the afternoon a touch but hot northwesterlies change cooler southerly late afternoon or evening. Lower level cloud may thicken up late afternoon about the foothills then nearer the coast later on or overnight. Early rain about Southland and Otago eases to a few showers then clearing / brightening up in the afternoon, winds from the west however tending southerly about coastal Otago from late morning.

Temperatures

Highs for the whole of the North Island / top, eastern and southern South Island will likely be in the late twenties if not early thirties today. Parts of Canterbury, Marlborough, the eastern North Island and Bay Of Plenty may even see highs in the mid thirties. Coastal fringe parts of the lower South Island and the West Coast sees highs in the early to mid twenties.
