Monday’s national forecast

Mostly cloudy about the North Island today although there may be a few sunny breaks at times, expect fresh northwesterly winds and showers a few of which may be heavy especially afternoon then easing later in the evening.

Morning rain eases about Wellington to showers, one or two of which may be heavy. Winds will be northwesterly at first tending southerly by evening. On the east coast, any morning rain clears becoming fine and sunny with mild temperatures in the afternoon. The odd shower may spread from the west in the evening however.

Rain in the South Island about Buller, Nelson and Marlborough easing to showers in the morning with light winds tending south to southwesterly during the day. Showers south of Greymouth clear in the morning then about Buller from afternoon with sunny breaks then increasing.

Expect showers in Canterbury with easterly winds tending southerly around midday, drizzle patches in coastal Otago with east to northeast winds. Cloudy areas and a chance of sun in Southland and Central Otago with east to northeast breezes, mainly dry but the odd light shower possible in the afternoon mainly in the east.

Snow in the South Island stays above 1000m.

High’s expected today in the North Island are 17 north of Auckland, 16 to 17 on the east coast after midday, 13 to 14 in Wellington and about the Central North Island. Mid teen temperatures elsewhere. High’s ranging from 12 to 13 degrees about the top of the South Island and along the West Coast, 9 to 10 degrees in Christchurch and Otago, 11 for Southland.
