A weak front moves northwards over the North Island today while over the South Island we see a strengthening westerly airflow. Gales possible especially about the Southland coastline / Catlins area.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty

Areas of cloud, chance of a shower or two otherwise mainly dry. The Bay Of Plenty is mostly sunny. Breezy southwesterly winds.
Highs: 21-22

Western North Island (including Central North Island)

Cloudy areas this morning with a few showers then becoming mostly sunny in the afternoon as south to southeasterly winds push through.
Highs: 18-21

Eastern North Island

Mostly sunny this morning, cloud develops this afternoon with southerlies bringing the chance of a shower, otherwise remaining dry.
Highs: 16-19

Wellington

Sunny with southerly breezes, dying out by evening.
High: 16

Marlborough & Nelson

Mostly sunny with light winds tending easterly this afternoon, west to southwesterly winds pick up later this evening. Southwesterly winds for Nelson for much of the day.
Highs: 16-18

Canterbury

Some morning cloud then becoming mostly sunny, southwesterly winds die out by midday.
High: 17

West Coast

Sunny areas with southwesterly winds, freshening from afternoon. A few showers move into Fiordland after midday then spread northwards later in the evening.
Highs 15-16

Southland & Otago

Mostly cloudy for Southland, the odd shower possible mainly afternoon onwards, where westerly winds become strong with winds gusting to gale at times. Otago is mostly sunny, some cloud late afternoon or evening may bring a shower or two, otherwise mainly dry. Westerly winds becoming gusty from afternoon with gales possible about the coast, Otago Peninsula southwards.
