Hot night for Cantabs

Very warm nor’ westers throughout Canterbury overnight made it a sleepless one for many.

Temperatures remained in the low 20s throughout the night and peaked at 24 degrees in Christchurch at 3am. Nearby Kaiapoi and Rangiora topped 26 degrees.

This morning the temperature has dipped a couple of degrees but still a mild 21 in the Garden City under some high cloud and a breezy nor’ wester off and on.

The high for Christchurch today by the MetService is 22 degrees and yet was topped earlier this morning.

…currently 22 deg C , with light NW breeze, the nor’west arch having now cleared, after an overnight low of 14.5 deg C; warmest low since 27th April when 16.5 deg C recorded…

If it reached 24 degrees at 3am this morning, and assuming it doesn’t get warmer later today, then does that mean our official high for today has already been reached, and that’s what will be reported as the daily high on the news? Or is there a certain time range a daily high has to be obtained?

Also, yesterday Christchurch officially reached 18 degrees. Yet at 9pm last night it was around 22 degrees. Does this mean the statistical keepers have to rewrite the official high for the day? Or again, because it happened late at night, it’s not considered?

If this is happening, this would mean a lot of incorrect statistics for average temperature highs for Canterbury as we quite often get nor’westers in the evening boosting the temperature late in the day.

…traditionally the daily high ( max) is read at 9 a.m. local time…and entered into the previous days readings…

…so at this station, under those rules, the maximum temp / high was 22.5 deg C.for yesterday, Friday 11th December, 2009

…and the current temp is 29.4 deg with a fresh, occas. gusty NW breeze, and mainly sunny…
