Gusty winds across the main centres

It’s windy in our 3 largest cities today as a system with ‘spring-like characteristics’ continues to cross the country.

In the past hour gusts in Auckland have reached 50km/h in exposed places and continue to strengthen.

But it’s Wellington and Christchurch that are receiving the brunt of the strong winds.

Christchurch has a westerly near 50km/h gusting to 70km/h while in Wellington conditions are more gusty with a northerly averaging 35km/h but gusting close to 80km/h.

On the hills around Wellington gusts near 105km/h are being recorded while Castlepoint, the southern-most tip of the North Island, is clocking speeds over 130km/h.

Today is a classic example,We having sustained winds this afternoon far more than any gust during Sunday.

What to do for a bit of fun on a windy day in Christchurch? Fly a kite at a park that is near an airport and watch the pilots land the smaller planes in gusts of 80 km. It’s math in motion and the kids love it. Good day ya’ll.

I think you have castlepoint confused with cape palliser, which is the southernmost point of the north island
