Friday’s national forecast

A ridge lies over most of New Zealand today, extending out from an anticyclone to the east of the country.

North Island

Mostly sunny for the western North Island today, there may be a few afternoon clouds about. Light winds then afternoon sea breezes north of Taranaki. Winds from the southeast Taranaki southwards in the west. Mostly cloudy skies for the east coast with showers, dry spells increase from afternoon and some sun may even break through, winds from the southeast.

South Island

Mostly sunny for the South Island today, expect areas of morning cloud especially in the east then breaking away. East to northeast winds pick up from afternoon in the east, west to southwesterly winds in the west. There may be a touch of high cloud about the far south.

Temperatures

Highs in the low to mid twenties for the western North Island, mid to late teens in the east and about Wellington. Highs in the late teens or early twenties about coastal parts of the South Island, getting into the mid to late twenties for some inland areas.
