Friday’s national forecast

A series of cold fronts push northwards over the country today delivering rain to most regions.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Becoming mostly cloudy in the morning, chance of a shower then afternoon rain. Rain eases in the evening as northwest winds change southwest.
Highs: 21-22

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Morning rain with heavy falls then easing to showers in the afternoon as gusty northwesterly winds tend westerly. Showers clear overnight with a southerly winds change.
Highs: 15-18

Eastern North Island
High cloud, some rain spreads into Wairarapa from the west in the morning then Hawkes Bay afternoon and Gisborne evening as a front pushes northwards. Showers push into Wairarapa in the evening as northwest winds change southwest.
Highs: 22-25

Wellington
Morning rain clears then some sun breaks through. Showers pick up from late afternoon or evening, possibly heavy with thunder and small hail as southerlies freshen. Conditions ease overnight.
High: 19

Marlborough & Nelson
Morning rain clears then mostly sunny, a late afternoon southerly change about Marlborough brings showers possibly heavy with small hail / thunder then clearing at night.
Highs: 20-23

Canterbury
Dry at first then a fresh southwest change around midday brings showers, possibly heavy with thunderstorms and hail then easing evening (heavy showers / thunder and hail may be more likely about inland areas of Mid and North Canterbury).
Highs: 16-20

West Coast
Showers, chance of the odd heavy fall with thunder / hail then easing and clearing in the evening. Fresh westerlies tend southwest in the afternoon then ease.
Highs: 13-15

Southland & Otago
Morning rain, possibly heavy with small hail then easing to showers in the afternoon. Long dry spells develop evening but the odd shower may still push through at times. Cold southwesterly winds, strong about coastal Otago then easing at night.
Highs: 13-16
