Friday’s national forecast

A low pressure system and front rotates onto New Zealand from the Tasman Sea today bringing wet weather to most regions.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Rain about Northland spreads elsewhere during the morning, easing to showers in the afternoon as northerlies change westerly. Showers may be heavy at times with a risk of thunder for Northland, perhaps Auckland also but this risk is less. The Bay Of Plenty has a similar day as the above regions however rain doesn’t move in till late morning then easing evening as that NNE / WNW wind change moves through.

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Mostly cloudy, rain with a chance of heavy falls developing in the morning for Taranaki then easing from afternoon as northeasterly winds change northwest. A dry morning elsewhere with some rain developing in the afternoon then easing in the evening as that northwest change moves through.
Highs: 11-14

Eastern North Island
High cloud thickens up in the morning, some rain spreads from the west mid to late afternoon then clearing late evening as northeasterly winds change northwest.
Highs: 15-17

Wellington
Cloudy, a period of afternoon rain then easing to showers by evening as northeasterly winds tend northwest.
High: 13

Marlborough & Nelson
Rain with a chance of heavy falls moving into Nelson during the morning then Marlborough in the afternoon, easing to showers by evening. Northeasterly winds change southerly or perhaps even westerly later on.
Highs: 10-12

Canterbury
Mostly cloudy, chance of a spit or shower, rain develops in the evening especially Banks Peninsula southwards. Light winds gradually tend to the south.
Highs: 8-11

West Coast
Areas of rain, heavy at times. Easing from afternoon about South Westland then overnight further north. Light winds, perhaps tending east to southeast.
Highs: 10-12

Southland & Otago
Mostly cloudy, chance of a shower from afternoon then overnight rain moves into Otago. Light winds tend south to southeast by midday.
Highs: 7-10
