An anticyclone sits in the Tasman Sea today directing a west to southwesterly airflow over New Zealand.

North Island
Morning cloud with the risk of a shower about Auckland through to Waikato then sunny spells increase, mostly sunny for the Bay Of Plenty. West to southwesterly winds freshen this afternoon. For the lower western North Island (Taranaki through to Kapiti) expect morning cloud then mostly sunny weather, winds from the west or southwest, gusty this afternoon for coastal Taranaki.

Southerlies pick up this morning for the Wairarapa bringing cloud and the risk of a shower, southerlies spreading further north this afternoon into Hawkes Bay and Gisborne with a mix of sun and cloud expected.

Afternoon high's in the low to mid twenties for many regions in the North Island today, the coolest temperatures about the coast in the south and west. Temperatures reaching into the high twenties or perhaps early thirties for Bay Of Plenty and perhaps East Cape.

South Island
Mostly sunny for the West Coast apart from some morning cloud, west to southwesterly winds. Mostly sunny for Nelson and Marlborough with south to southwesterly winds tending onshore this afternoon. Morning cloud for Canterbury breaks to mostly sunny weather, south to southwesterly winds tend east to northeast this afternoon. Cloud about Southland spreads into Otago this morning as southwesterly winds freshen, showers for Southland may spread into Otago at times midday onwards, mainly near the coast. Southwesterlies die away in the evening with shower activity clearing.

Afternoon high's in the late teens or low twenties for most of the South Island today, getting into the mid twenties for Nelson and Marlborough. Some parts of Fiordland, Southland and coastal Otago may only get into the mid teens.
