Friday’s national forecast

A southwesterly airflow ease over New Zealand today while a front moves onto the lower South Island this evening.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty

Sunny spells and the odd shower possible, mainly morning with drier conditions likely from afternoon. Breezy southwesterly winds.
Highs: 17-20

Western North Island (including Central North Island)

Showers clearing around midday then sunny spells increase from afternoon, southwesterly winds tend northwest in the evening south of Taranaki.
Highs: 16-17

Eastern North Island

The odd shower, clearing in the evening. Sunny spells will gradually become more frequent as the day goes along. Gusty cool southwesterly winds die out later in the day.
Highs: 16-18

Wellington

Showers clearing in the morning then a few sunny spells break through, strong southerly winds (possible gusting to gale in the morning) ease dying out by evening.
High: 15

Marlborough & Nelson

Sunny with some high cloud later in the day, morning southerly winds die out tending north to northeasterly in the afternoon.
High: 18

Canterbury

Any early coastal showers clear then expect sunny spells, southwesterly winds tend east to northeast in the afternoon.
Highs: 17-19

West Coast

Mostly sunny with light winds, some rain develops about Fiordland in the evening however then spreads northwards overnight. Light winds tend westerly in the afternoon.
Highs: 15-19

Southland & Otago

Sunny areas and increasing high cloud, chance of a brief evening or overnight shower as northwesterly winds change southwest.
Highs: 17-24
