Friday’s national forecast

A low and front combination move towards New Zealand from the west today bringing rain to some western regions by evening, with rain spreading to most overnight with heavy falls for some.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty

Cloudy areas and the odd shower, but sunny spells too with long dry areas more so about Northland. Showers more likely later in the evening for all, then rain moves in overnight. Northwesterly winds.

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Mostly cloudy with the odd shower, rain develops in the evening as breezy northwesterly winds tend northeast. Rain may be heavy overnight especially about Taranaki.
Highs: 14-17
 
Eastern North Island
Sunny areas and increasing high cloud, northwesterly breezes. Some rain pushes into the Wairarapa and Hawkes Bay overnight from the west.
Highs: 19-20
 
Wellington
Sunny areas and increasing cloud, rain moves in around evening, possibly heavy overnight. Northwesterly winds.
High: 16
 
Marlborough & Nelson
Sunny areas and increasing high cloud, light winds. Rain moves in during the evening, becoming heavy by midnight. Nelson, in particular, may see heavy rain cause issues overnight, however hopefully the front moves through in a speedy enough fashion to keep any potential problems to a minimum.

Canterbury
Mainly sunny, cloud increases later in the day with light winds tending Easterly. Rain develops overnight.
High: 14
 
West Coast
Morning showers clear to sunny areas, westerly winds. Cloud increases from late afternoon, late evening rain becoming heavy overnight about Buller, with easterlies.
Highs: 12-14
 
Southland & Otago
Morning cloud with the chance of a few showers about Southland, then breaking to mostly sunny weather in the afternoon, with a mainly sunny day elsewhere. Light winds.
Highs: 9-11
