Friday’s national forecast

A front moves northwards over the South Island today bringing some rain in the west and a few showers out east. The North Island under a northwesterly airflow sees cloudy skies in the west and the odd shower, drier and sunnier out east. Later in the evening and overnight heavy rain moves into Northland.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty

Cloudy or becoming cloudy this morning, the odd shower moves in this afternoon turning to rain about Northland this evening which then moves southwards overnight. Rain may contain heavy falls, more so overnight. Increasing Nor’Westerly winds.
Highs: 15-16

Western North Island (including Central North Island)

Mostly cloudy with West to Nor’Westerly winds, easing in the evening. The odd shower affects Palmerston North northwards during the day.
Highs: 12-14

Eastern North Island

A mostly sunny morning then high cloud thickens from afternoon, winds mainly light coming from the westerly quarter.
Highs: 16-18

Wellington

Mainly cloudy with brisk Nor’Westerly winds, late Southerlies bring a few showers.
High: 13

Marlborough & Nelson

High cloud thickens in the morning with northwesterly winds, a few brief showers possible later in the evening on a southerly change.
Highs: 14-16

Canterbury

Thick high cloud in the morning, afternoon southerlies bring the chance of a few showers then clearing away in the evening.
High: 12

West Coast

Cloudy, some rain moves through South Westland in the morning then into North Westland during the afternoon. Rain not lasting for long and clearing in behind as northwesterly winds change southwest.
Highs: 12-13

Southland & Otago

Early rain eases to the odd shower which clears around midday for Otago but not till evening for Southland, cloud breaks to sun once showers clear. Cold SW winds ease later on.
Highs: 8
