Friday night’s national forecast

A front moves north over the South Island overnight bringing heavy rain to the west, strong northwesterly winds preced the front. Out east conditions will be mainly dry with high cloud. For the North Island expect northwesterly winds with some cloud developing overnight, strong to gale northerlies move into Cook Strait.

Auckland & Northland
Clear spells and some cloud, brisk westerly winds ease later this evening. Overnight some cloud moves in with winds tending more northwest.

Central North Island, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty

Clear with a few clouds about and westerly winds, cloud increases overnight as winds tend more northwest.
Tonight’s Low: 13-16

Eastern North Island

Mainly clear skies with high cloud developing overnight, breezy west to northwesterly winds.
Tonight’s Lows: 16-17

Western North Island

Mainly clear skies with some cloud increasing later this evening, breezy northwesterly winds. The odd shower develops overnight for Kapiti and about northern Taranaki.
Tonight’s Lows: 15-16

Wellington

Areas of cloud increase this evening with northerlies becoming strong to gale force overnight. The odd shower develops after midnight.
Tonight’s Low: 16

Nelson

Becoming mostly cloudy this evening with brisk northwesterly winds, the odd shower develops tomorrow around dawn.
Tonight’s Lows: 15-16

Marlborough

High cloud thickens with strong northwesterly winds, the odd shower develops about the Sounds overnight and some rain may spread to all areas tomorrow morning for a time.
Tonight’s Lows: 14-15

Canterbury

Gusty north to northwest breezes with high cloud, some rain spreads into the foothills overnight and may spread to the coast around dawn tomorrow.
Tonight’s Lows: 13-14

West Coast

Heavy rain eases overnight about South Westland as northerlies change gusty westerly.
Tonight’s Lows: 11-12

Coastal Otago

Thick high cloud with northerly breezes, around midnight a brisk WSW change moves through bringing the risk of a shower or two.
Tonight’s Low: 10

Central Otago

Brisk strong strong westerlies with some rain, more so in the west with high cloud out east. Rain eases overnight.
Tonight’s Low: 7

Southland

Cloudy with gusty northerlies, chance spots of rain. Winds change westerlyaround midnight with the odd shower possible mainly on the coast.
Tonight’s Lows: 7-8
