Desert Road re-opens…for now

The Desert Road on State Highway 1 in the central North Island has reopened but snow showers are continuing and drivers are being warned to take care as winter driving conditions exist.

In the South Island, the Lindis Pass to Tarras is closed and flooding has closed State Highway 1 from Hilderthorpe to Oamar.

A snow warning is in place for Porters Pass.

WeatherWatch.co.nz says that the road may well be closed again overnight as melted snow turns to black ice.

Had hail and sleet around 9 am this morning with a fresh to strong SSW…this afternoon in between bright sunshine some hail as well, as evidenced by accompanied photos of hail producing Cb’s – hopefully uploaded!
