Big low dominates start of 2009

WeatherWatch.co.nz

First of all Happy New Year from everyone at the Weather Watch Centre.

We’re excited about 2009 and running this website through 4 full seasons of weather!

The first day of 2009 is going to be dominated by a very large low south of New Zealand in the Southern Ocean.  Air pressure in the centre of this low is close to 970hPa and the low has been impacting our weather for a number of days now.

Hot nor’westers say 31 degrees in Timaru and Christchurch yesterday and 29 degrees in Gisborne.  It was 28 in Napier, Hastings, Dunedin and Alexandra and 27 in Whangarei.

January 1st in New Zealand will see more unsettled weather continuing.  A few weak fronts over the North Island will see a few showers in the morning, and in the afternoon sunshine combined with high humidity could create a few more.  It’s going to be a hot day for most places especially the north and east of both islands.

This low looks set to dominate our weather for the next few days with rain or showers spreading to a number of places on Friday or Saturday.

An absolute boomer day again here in Whangarei, apart from a bit of cloud passing over late afternoon as it also did yesterday, the day has been terrific. Clear blue skies, little or no wind and very hot while mowing the lawns.
Another great day for the Waipu Caledonian Games, have never known a bad one yet.

Happy New year to all of you at Weather Watch, thanks for the site and the efforts you put into it. You have bought a new lease of life into weather forecasting with all of the blogs you post about “The Weather”.
Thanks.
